Challenges and Triumphs
I have most definitely experienced lots of challenges and personal triumphs. When out of the comfort zone, we seem to remember the challenges and sometimes failures a lot more. This is the case for me at least. Just recently my señora was asking if our bathing suites were wet, mojado. Well, i thought she said almohada, pillow. Jajaja, well she looked at me like "this chica!" I said to her, ahora, yo se una nueva palabra.
I feel like this happens a lot. I feel like I understand exactly what she, is saying and I say something and our senora is like "queeeeeee?!!" It makes me laugh, it makes us all laugh, and I try to brush it off when Jaclyn, Elodia, and I realize that there is such a language barrier with the topic we all thought we were talking about. But we all laugh it off and eventually figure it out slowly. When I say something that is slightly incorrect, like I speak with a masculine ending when it is supposed to be feminine, it is those little things that seem to annoy Elodia. Or any fluent speaker. I feel quite ashamed. But practice will make better.
Today at Malaga for el almuerzo, Gaba, Jac and I ordered two aguas con gas and one agua sin gas, sin gas para a mi. Our waiter never gave us the agua sin gas. So we left the money for la cuenta menos la agua sin gas. Lots of confusion happened but it all worked out. We explained to him << nosotros no recibimos la agua sin gas>> and he just gave us a water and we called it a day. It felt nice that our waiter eventually understood us and we were able to communicate clearly with him.
Lots of triumphs and tribulations this past week with all of the culture shock. Lots to come!
LOVE THIS! I can just hear you through my computer screen pretending youre Elodia saying..."QUEEEEE!!!". Hopefully we figure out soon how to correctly order water at a restaurant. Can't wait to read again next week! :)))))
ReplyDeleteI can literally picture you saying "Queeeee" and it makes me laugh a lot. You're doing so well in speaking Spanish! You definitely have a lot of triumphs to come
ReplyDeleteI find that humor and being able to laugh things off, including your own mistakes, the best way to overcome how ridiculous some misunderstanding are. So continue to do that!
